Pursued by Yakuza agents and a crazed cyborg, Johnny must deliver the data or die in twenty-four hours.
In 2021, the whole world is connected by the gigantic Internet, and almost a half of the population is suffering from the Nerve Attenuation Syndrome (NAS).Johnny with an inplanted memory chip in his brain was ordered to transport the over loaded information from Beijing to Newark. While Pharmakom Industries supported by yakuza tries to capture him to get the informaiton back, the Low-tech group led by J-Bone tries to break the missing code to download the cure of NAS which Johnny carries.
I liked the film, but I do not think it is for everybody. I was interested in the ideas of the movie, and it has a lot of potential. This movie does not have the best special effects, but it is fun to watch on a Saturday night with nothing better to do. I like it a lot better than The Lawn Mower Man.
OK, so I've read most of William Gibson's books and short stories. I was quite excited when I heard they were making a film of Johnny Mnemonic.<br/><br/>Then I saw the film. What a turkey. Molly isn't in it. How can they make Johnny Mnemonic without Molly? Nope, they stick some random T&A in it called 'Jane', what's that about?<br/><br/>They stick a load of stuff that didn't happen in the short story in it, take out a lot of what happened in the short story out, and we have a different film by the same name.<br/><br/>Rent 'Strange Days' instead, it's the film that 'Johnny Mnemonic' should have been. It's not the Gibson plot, but then neither is this movie. 'Strange Days' gets the cyber punk atmosphere down properly, where 'Johnny' completely fails, and it descends into farce.<br/><br/>I might re-read the short story, and rent the film again, and do a gobble by gobble account of why this film is such a turkey. Oh wait, no, I already wasted enough time on it!

Because of Takeshi Kitano's role, there was a different edition released in Japanese cinemas and DVD-shops than in other countries. But there have not only been added new scenes, instead the original version was seemingly used for another version in Japan. The difficulty of Johnny willing to get back his memory is less important here. Instead the film focusses on Takeshi Kitano's ambivalent character. Due to the different version and the fact that the Japanese edition is much longer, there are several other advanced scenes or new scenes included.
